Pomona, CA—Grand National Roadster Show Gathers Prestigious Array of Sponsored Awards; January 23-25, 2009, at the Pomona Fairplex.
Over the years the GNRS has established many special awards outside of the traditional show awards to honor achievements within the hot rod, custom car and chopper motorcycle culture worldwide. A couple of new awards have been added which will continue to add to the GNRS reputation as not just the longest running car show in the world, but as the most distinguished show of its kind.
The list of Spotlight awards presented at the 60th annual GNRS includes:
AL SLONAKER MEMORIAL AWARD
$1,000, & the Al Slonaker Memorial Trophy.
Al and Mary Slonaker created the Grand National Roadster Show in Oakland, CA in 1950. In their honor a winner is selected by a judging committee that considers originality, craftsmanship and engineering.
GEORGE BARRIS KUSTOM D’ELLIGANCE AWARD
$500 & Barris Custom Trophy.
George Barris is truly the “King of the Kustomizers” and in keeping with that moniker he or a family member awards a customized car built in the United States based on originality, craftsmanship, style and design.
BRIZIO FAMILY AWARD
$500 & Custom Brizio Steering Wheel Trophy.
Andy and Sue Brizio and now son Roy have been Bay Area hot rod stalwarts for decades, as well as past winners of the “America’s Most Beautiful Roadster” award, and are known for promoting the driving aspect of roadster ownership. The Brizio family select a street driven hot rod - 1948 and older.
BLACKIE GEJEIAN AWARD presented by BONES CONCEPT CARS
$500 & Trophy.
Blackie is a revered show promoter from Fresno and past AMBR winner, heavily involved in show cars for over five decades. This is his personal pick of the show.
ASHCROFT MOTORCYCLE AWARD
$250 & an Ashcroft Leather Motorcycle Jacket.
Lynn Ashcroft has build award winning motorcycles at Ashcroft Motorcycles in Salem, Oregon for over 12 years and interestingly, is a Circuit Court Judge for Marion County. This is Ashcroft’s personal motorcycle pick of the show.
CHIP FOOSE DESIGN OF EXCELLENCE AWARD
A Foose Design Billet Pencil.
This award is presented by Chip Foose for a vehicle honoring the beauty and originality of creative automotive design. Chip is a past AMBR builder having designed and built numerous show winners over the last decade. Chip or a Foose family member makes the selection.
BRUCE MEYER HOTROD PRESERVATION AWARD
Name added to the Perpetual Trophy.
Bruce has a number of historically significant hot rods and race cars and has been at the forefront of collecting 1940s and 1950s hot rods. The winning car must be a hot rod/race car (no customs) originally built before 1955, or in the spirit of the 50’s era. The vehicle must be preserved to original condition. A three person committee will select the winner.
VON DUTCH PINSTRIPING AWARD
Hand made Trophy & Owners Plaque.
Presented to the striper and vehicle owner whose pinstriping best represents the work of the late Von Dutch. Award judged by Tommy Otis, Steve Stanford and the prior year’s Von Dutch award winner.
WEST COAST CUSTOMS OUTSTANDING NOSTALGIA AWARD
The West Coast Customs are a group of custom car owners in the southland, who put on a great custom car event every year in Santa Maria, CA. A plaque is awarded to a traditional custom car, presented by the Pichette Family.
THE GRAY BASKERVILLE “SO BITCHIN” AWARD
A Custom Made Award
Gray Baskerville was for over three decades the voice of hot rodding in both Hot Rod and Rod & Custom magazines. Awarded to a vehicle that Gray himself would have said “Man, that vehicle is So Bitchin,” by a small committee headed by Eric Vaughn.
H & H FLATHEAD – BEST FLATHEAD AWARD
A Custom Made Trophy
H&H Flatheads is one of the leaders in Ford flathead components and engine rebuilding. Their award goes to the best looking and detailed flathead motor in the show.
STEVE’S AUTO RESTORATION AWARD
A Custom Made Plaque.
Awarded to an all-metal car or truck with outstanding metal fabrication, fit and finish. Winner selected by Steve's Auto Restorations, Portland, Oregon, known for some of the finest metal shaping and body work in the country.
L.A. ROADSTERS—L.A. DEUCE AWARD
Bronze Sculpture by Steve Posson of the Classic Deuce High Boy
The L.A.Roadsters club has long been associated with the GNRS. This award is given to a roadster owner who represents the spirit of roadster traditions—one who drives his roadster to outdoor events, in any kind of weather. Club members will choose a roadster with at least 2500 miles on the odometer.
